There was a lot of news lately that may have a profound effect on pharmacy employment and feel they are worth noting again here.
By now I’m sure you are aware the oral arguments are over in the Supreme Court on the constitutionality of the Affordable Care Act. We now have to wait for the Courts decision coming most likely in June. The other big story this week is the approval of the ESI/Medco merger. I know groups are proceeding with lawsuits to block it or manage its process so we will just have to wait and see how those turn out.
Whether you agree or disagree these two events in my opinion are going to impact the pharmacy employment market. It seems the one constant in pharmacy today is change and unless you have already read it I suggest you pick up a copy of “Who Moved My Cheese” by Spencer Johnson, M.D. I’ve read the book many times and feel it should be required reading by all.
As more new grad PharmD’s enter the market each semester employers will have more to pick from. Increasingly so new grads will have to look to the more rural areas to find gainful employment. With CA adding yet another new college of pharmacy making it 9 new schools, and 16 or 17 total, many wonder where all the new grads are going to find internships sites much-less jobs. Unless as a country we adopt more of a European model and retire at 55 years old, or the US economy begins to add a lot more new jobs quickly, the next several years are going to prove difficult for pharmacists to say the least. I can’t predict which direction the US will go but according to an article I just read the employment market is getting worse in Europe. This could very easily spill over into the US and pull us back into a recession. Europe’s Economy Is Eating Its Young, and It’s About to Get Worse
According to the following Infographic though, Are You Monogamous, 61% of employed workers are open to or are looking for a new job, are you?
This piece cited many other interesting factoids like, the avg. college grad will hold 9.8 jobs and will work until age 65. In CA that same grad will hold 14.3 jobs, no doubt to possibly taking more part-time or temporary jobs due to all the new schools opening. Sorry just kidding!
