LOCATION: Rochester, Minnesota

EMPLOYER: CPS / Olmsted Medical Center

POSITION: Director of Pharmacy

WHY YOU’LL LOVE IT: Rochester, Minnesota, the county seat of Olmsted County, is home to the world famous Mayo Clinic. Located on both banks of the Zumbro River, the city is Minnesota’s third-largest city and the largest outside of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. The city is surrounded by rich farmland and is a center for crop and dairy production. 80+miles away are the cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul offering easy access to big city cultural and sports events.

The territorial legislature created Olmsted County on February 20, 1855, with Rochester named county seat in 1857. Rochester developed as a stagecoach stop between Saint Paul, Minnesota, and Dubuque, Iowa. When the railroad arrived in the 1860s, it brought new residents and business opportunities. In 1863, Dr. William W. Mayo arrived as the examining surgeon for draftees in the Civil War.

On August 21, 1883, the Great Tornado demolished much of Rochester, leaving 37 dead and about 200 injured. There was no medical facility at the time, so Mayo and his two sons worked together to care for the wounded. Donations of $60,000 were collected and the Sisters of St. Francis, assisted by Mayo, opened a new facility named St. Marys Hospital in 1889.[5] The Mayo practice grew and is today among the largest and most well-respected medical facilities in the world. Many famous people from around the world, including former Presidents George H.W. Bush, Gerald Ford, and Ronald Reagan, have visited Rochester as patients of the Mayo Clinic.

Opportunities to enjoy running, hiking, inline skating, biking or walking throughout Rochester are endless.  The city offers more than 85 miles of trails with amazing city and country views and recently finished surfaces.  Rochester provides easy and accessible ways for residents and visitors to incorporate physical activity into their daily lives.

Rochester’s rich shopping scene is marked by a variety of one-of-a-kind independent shops.  Browse on Third Street, pass through downtown’s University Square Mall or explore the shops along the underground walkways.  A variety of locally owned stores and popular national brands can be found in the Apache Mall, the largest shopping center in southeast Minnesota.  One great benefit of shopping here?  No sales tax on clothing!

There are magnificent attractions, theatres, restaurants, sporting events, and entertainment located in the heart of the city. Plan to come and enjoy the multitude of options available. There is truly something for everyone!

A small city with a big city transportation system, Rochester, Minn. offers a skyway system, subterranean walkways, bus, taxi, car rentals and airport shuttles to connect its many attractions for residents and visitors.

Money Magazine said it best, “One thing to remember about Rochester is that it has the sophistication of a larger metro area, but not the congestion or the complications.” Named “Best Small City” in America by the nationally recognized magazine, Rochester merges a cosmopolitan atmosphere with Midwestern hospitality giving residents and visitors a most memorable experience.
